What Happens at a Custom Door Design Consultation?

We come to the house, measure the opening, look at sun and cover, talk through styles and wood, and then send a scaled drawing with a written, itemised quote. There is no obligation to go ahead.

St. Pete Custom Doors builds and installs hand-carved and custom wood doors in St. Petersburg, FL. Short answer: We come to the house, measure the opening, look at sun and cover, talk through styles and wood, and then send a scaled drawing with a written, itemised quote. There is no obligation to go ahead.

What We Look at on Site

  • The opening: width and height at several points, how square it is, and the real curve of an arch.
  • Exposure: afternoon sun and rain on an uncovered door change the wood and finish we recommend.
  • The house: its style and era, so the door looks like it belongs.
  • Code: whether the opening needs an impact-rated door or shutters, and whether the house is historic.

What You Get Afterwards

A scaled drawing of the door with the wood, carving, glass and hardware marked, and a written quote that lists the door, installation and any permit work as separate lines, so you can see what each part costs.

Bring photos of doors you like, or nothing at all; plenty of people start with a plain custom door and add carving later in the drawing.

FAQ

More on Design Consultations

Do I need to know what style I want?

No. Most people pick from examples at the consultation, or describe a feeling (modern, Old World, Mediterranean) and we draw options.

Is the consultation at my house?

Yes. The opening has to be measured where it is; an arch or an out-of-square frame can't be judged from a photo.
