When an Impact-Rated Door Is Required
Florida's wind-borne debris region covers places designed for 140 mph winds or more, or 130 mph within a mile of the coast. St. Petersburg designs to 145 mph, and Hillsborough County maps its own 140 mph zone along the bay; check your address on the county map. In that region, glass in an exterior door must be impact-rated or protected by approved shutters, and many owners choose a rated door so the opening needs no shutters at all. The permit lists the product's Florida Product Approval or Miami-Dade NOA number.
Impact-Rated Wood Doors Available in Florida
Approved wood impact doors come from a small number of makers, including Custom Doors of Miami (mahogany, including pivot doors, Florida approvals FL#28370 and FL#16326), ETO Doors (carved Brazilian mahogany, FL15125) and Simpson Door (custom sizes, several Florida approvals valid outside the Miami-Dade and Broward high-velocity zone). Before ordering, we check on the Florida Building Commission's product approval database that the approval covers your opening's size, design pressure and installation method. Custom impact doors typically take nine to twelve weeks to make.
Why Our Carved Doors Are Not Rated
A rating comes from lab-testing a specific design. A one-off carved door has not been through that testing, so it carries no rating. When an opening needs a rated door, we source one that is certified, and carry the carving through the house on interior doors and gates.
Installing to the Product Approval
A rated door is a tested system. It is installed to the approval's method, with the fasteners and hardware it allows, because an installation that departs from the approval can void it.
Insurance Credits and Paperwork
Florida insurers give premium credits for verified opening protection, documented on a wind-mitigation inspection. Keep the permit and approval paperwork.
