Restoration or Replica: Which Your House Needs

An original door is often repairable, and in a historic district repair is usually what the review board wants to see first. We assess the original before recommending a replacement; see door repair.

Review Boards and Certificates of Appropriateness

Exterior work in Tampa's Hyde Park local historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the City of Tampa's Architectural Review Commission. Some are issued by staff; others go to a public hearing, and the commission often asks for door material and detail specifications. We prepare scaled drawings and specifications for the application. In St. Petersburg, the locally designated districts include Roser Park, Granada Terrace, Lang's Bungalow Court, Welch's Mediterranean Row and two districts in Kenwood, plus individually designated landmarks. Most of the Old Northeast is a National Register district, which does not by itself require local review. Certificates are mostly issued by city staff, with larger items going to the Community Planning and Preservation Commission. We check the address before we draw.

Matching Period Detail

Replicas are drawn from the original door, old photographs, or doors on neighbouring houses of the same age: panel layout, moulding profiles, glass pattern and hardware.

What Affects the Cost of a Replica

Research, drawings, profile matching and any review-board work. Most of our custom doors run $4,000 to $20,000, installed; the exact number is set in a written quote once the opening is measured and the materials are chosen.
