Do Front Doors Need to Be Impact Rated in Tampa Bay?
In Florida's wind-borne debris region, glass in an exterior door must be impact-rated or protected by approved shutters, and every exterior door on a permitted job needs a product approval. The permit office confirms the rule for your address.
St. Pete Custom Doors builds and installs hand-carved and custom wood doors in St. Petersburg, FL. Short answer: In Florida's wind-borne debris region, glass in an exterior door must be impact-rated or protected by approved shutters, and every exterior door on a permitted job needs a product approval. The permit office confirms the rule for your address.
The Wind-Borne Debris Region
Under the Florida Building Code it covers land within one mile of the coast where the design wind speed is 130 mph or more, and anywhere the design wind speed is 140 mph or more. Much of coastal Pinellas and Hillsborough falls inside it. The stricter High-Velocity Hurricane Zone applies only in Miami-Dade and Broward.
What That Means for a Wood Door
Doors carved in our shop are not impact-rated. Where an opening needs protection we either install an approved impact-rated wood door from a certified maker, or pair the custom door with approved shutters. We tell you which applies before we quote. See impact-rated wood front doors.
FAQ
More on Impact-Rated Doors
Is a solid door without glass impact-rated?
Not automatically. It still needs a product approval and a design pressure rating suited to the house.
Can a carved door be hurricane rated?
Only if it is built and tested as an approved product; a one-off shop-built door is not.
