How Long Does a Custom Wood Door Take to Build?
There is no fixed time: it is set at the consultation once the design and wood are chosen; carving detail, wood availability and finish curing are what move it most.
St. Pete Custom Doors builds and installs hand-carved and custom wood doors in St. Petersburg, FL. Short answer: There is no fixed time: it is set at the consultation once the design and wood are chosen; carving detail, wood availability and finish curing are what move it most.
The Stages, in Order
- Consultation and measuring
- Drawing and written quote
- Wood selected and settled to local air before it is cut
- Building the frame and panels, then carving
- Finishing on all six sides, and letting the finish cure
- Permit (where needed) and installation
Permit work can run alongside the build, so it rarely adds time on its own.
What Makes One Door Take Longer Than Another
- Carving: a border and one motif is a fraction of the hours in a full relief panel.
- Size: double, arched and oversized pivot doors take more wood and more hands.
- Wood: some imported species have to be ordered.
- Finish: rushing the cure is the most common cause of early finish failure, so we don't.
FAQ
More on Build Times
Can you rush a custom door?
Some steps can overlap, but acclimating the wood and curing the finish can't be skipped without risking the door.
Is a stock door faster?
Yes. If speed matters more than a custom fit, we can install a stock or online door properly instead.
